Sauna Heater Size Calculator – What Heater Should You Get?

This calculator estimates the required heater size for your sauna based on its dimensions and glass area.

The estimate is based on the assumption of 1.41584 kW per cubic meter:

Heater Size (kW) = (Width × Length × Height + Glass Width × Glass Height) / 1.41584

Please be aware that this calculator does not account for variables such as insulation quality, ventilation, and room geometry.

How to Use the Sauna Heater Size Calculator

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the Sauna Heater Size Calculator:

Step 1: Choose your preferred measurement system

The Metric and Imperial measurement systems are two different ways to associate numbers with physical quantities. This allows us to communicate precise measurements to one another.

The Metric System is commonly used internationally, whereas the Imperial System is used in America, Liberia and Myanmar.

Metric System Measurements

  • Speed – Kilometers per hour
  • Temperature – Celcius
  • Liquid – Litre
  • Weight – Kilograms, Grams
  • Distance – Centimeter, Meter, Kilometer

Imperial System Measurements

  • Speed – Miles per hour
  • Temperature – Fahrenheit
  • Liquid – Gallon
  • Weight – Pounds, Ounces
  • Distance – Inch, Yard, Mile

Step 2: Enter your width

Enter the width of your sauna in the measurement system you selected. This dimension is crucial for calculating the heater size accurately.

For the Metric System, width is measured in meters. For the Imperial System, width is measured in feet.

The width, along with the length and height of the sauna, determines the total volume, which is essential for estimating the appropriate heater size.

Use a measuring tape or a similar tool for precise measurements. If you have access to the sauna’s specifications, you can use those values for accuracy.

Step 3: Enter your length

Input the length of your sauna. This dimension is key for determining the overall volume of the sauna, which is essential for selecting a heater with adequate capacity.

The length, combined with the width and height, helps calculate the total space that needs to be heated.

For the most accurate measurement, use a measuring tape or a laser distance measurer. If you have architectural plans or specifications for your sauna, refer to those to ensure precision.

Step 4: Enter your height

Provide the height of your sauna. This measurement affects the total volume, which in turn influences the required heater size. The height, together with the width and length, determines the total internal space of the sauna.

Measure carefully using a tape measure or similar tool. If you have access to the sauna’s design blueprints or specifications, using those details can help you get a more accurate measurement.

Step 5: Enter your glass width

Specify the width of any glass or uninsulated areas in your sauna. Glass and other non-insulated surfaces can lead to additional heat loss, which needs to be factored into the heater size calculation.

This measurement helps adjust for the extra heat required to compensate for these surfaces.

Use a tape measure to obtain an accurate width measurement. If your sauna includes detailed design plans, these can provide precise dimensions for more accurate calculations.

Step 6: Enter your glass height

Provide the height of the glass or uninsulated surfaces in your sauna. This is important for adjusting the heater size to account for heat loss through these areas.

Accurate measurement of the glass height ensures that the heater size is appropriately adjusted for effective heating.

Measure the height with a tape measure or another precise tool. If available, refer to the sauna’s design specifications for the exact dimensions to improve accuracy in your heater size calculation.

Step 7: Click the “calculate” button

By clicking the “Calculate” button, the inputs you provided (sauna width, length, height, glass width, and glass height) will be used to determine the required heater size for your sauna.

The formula used to calculate the heater size is:

Heater Size (kW) = (Width × Length × Height + Glass Width × Glass Height) / 1.41584

Formula Components

Heater Size (kW) – The power required for the heater to efficiently heat the sauna space.

Width, Length, Height – Dimensions of the sauna, used to calculate the total volume.

Glass Width, Glass Height – Dimensions of any glass or uninsulated surfaces, factored into the calculation to account for additional heat loss.

1.41584 – This value represents the average power needed per cubic meter of sauna space, adjusted for the presence of glass or uninsulated areas.

Calculation Process

1. (Width × Length × Height)

Calculate the total volume of the sauna by multiplying the width, length, and height. This volume is crucial for determining how much heat is needed to warm the entire sauna space.

2. (Glass Width × Glass Height)

Compute the total area of the glass or uninsulated surfaces. This value is added to the total volume to account for additional heat loss through these surfaces.

3. (Width × Length × Height + Glass Width × Glass Height) / 1.41584

Add the volume of the sauna to the area of the glass surfaces. Then, divide the sum by 1.41584 to determine the required heater size in kilowatts. This step ensures the heater is appropriately sized to handle both the sauna’s volume and the additional heat loss from uninsulated areas.
